Resource Circularity

Orchid City's self-sufficiency is driven by a closed-loop, circular design powered by ecosystem services. In addition to food, energy, and water, all other resources, including building materials, transport, and equipment help maintain circularity.

Orchid City utilizes natural elements to encourage a closed-loop economy that captures value and boosts regeneration and biodiversity.

On-site workshops create essential daily products, such as ceramics, textiles, and where possible, biobased construction materials.

Together with the agriculture, social and cultural functions, these features help to create local employment and meaningful work for residents.

Resource Abundance with Stellar Energy

Orchid City's energy demands are supplied through the Stellar Energy system, proposed by RethinkX. A Stellar energy system utilizes commonly applied solar, wind, and battery technology, but with a smart systemic strategy. This strategy enables a near-zero marginal cost energy system, which provides surplus energy on most days of the year.

Stellar energy provides "energy superabundance", which enables Orchid City to both drive its life support program at low cost, while powering value added program and industries on top of this. This provides Orchid City both resilience and independence, while boosting its economic potential and enables a true economy of abundance.

Water Management

Orchid City's water supply system, like all else in the plan, is rendered self-sufficient. This is done with the aid of rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling to create a local, constant water supply. The residents' water needs are topped up by state-of-the-art water filtration and desalination plants, and smart irrigation systems regulate water usage for domestic and agricultural uses.

The system utilizes ecosystem services to power all water and wastewater management systems, which utilize very little power, and are able to generate biogas that is used to create the little power it needs, and beyond. Thus turning the water system energy positive.

Decentralized, autonomous wastewater treatment is accomplished using constructed wetlands and helophyte filters. The system cleans the water on-site and recycles it back into the cycle, promoting sustainability and biodiversity.
