Orchid City for Governments
Regenerative community development aligned with all 17 Sustainable Development Goals
A Scalable Framework for Regenerative Communities
Orchid City's blueprint model adapts to any location. Each masterplan addresses local challenges, culture, climate, and context.
The Orchid City framework applies to three development scenarios: redevelopment of existing neighborhoods and brownfield remediation, cluster additions to existing cities, and new areas and urban developments. The scale ranges from compact neighborhoods of 500 to full communities of 15,000 and beyond.
Scale and Investment
- 500 inhabitants: 4.1 ha built-up, 175 ha total footprint, 75% self-sufficiency, EUR 125 million development cost
- 5,000 inhabitants: 49 ha built-up, 1,840 ha total footprint, 90%+ self-sufficiency, EUR 1,400 million development cost
- 15,000 inhabitants: 140 ha built-up, 5,570 ha total footprint, 95%+ self-sufficiency, EUR 4,200 million development cost
Sustainable Development Goals
Orchid City directly contributes to all 17 goals outlined in the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
A system's ability to flourish and indefinitely sustain itself is only possible once a balance of resilience, autonomy, and harmony is found. Orchid City is a future-oriented self-sufficient and regenerative community that supports these pillars to ensure its own sustainability and enhances broader society.

Cost Savings for Residents
According to the Orchid City value model, combining essential life services such as housing, food, water, energy, and mobility allows for convenience and significant cost savings.
This way, families enjoy a reduced cost of living while experiencing a healthier and more comfortable living environment.
A typical Dutch family spends EUR 2,173 per month on housing, utilities, food, clothing, and transport. In Orchid City, that total drops to EUR 1,953 per month (10% savings), with 50% of food provided from local production, 100% of utilities included, and transport costs halved.

Context Sensitive Adaptation
The Orchid City blueprint adapts to local climate, culture, and contexts - each project is tailored to specific local needs and societal challenges.
We utilized three global locations as pilots for Orchid City to help showcase how it can be used to address a vast range of problematic but inherently different environmental and cultural scenarios.

Symbiosis in Development
We utilize Symbiosis in Development (SiD), an integrated and dynamic systems thinking methodology, to develop holistic and sustainable solutions. This process allows for an objective assessment of each locality, the specific environment, and its unique social, climate, and economic systems. This whole-systems approach to evaluation and design is what makes an Orchid City so practical, adaptive, and sustainable.
